In the conventional concrete green concrete is the most usable concrete, for production of this type of concrete less type of energy is required and also this type of concrete harms the environment very less.
What Is Environmentally Friendly Concrete?
The concrete which is made of concrete wastes is called environmentally friendly concrete or green concrete. In the production of environmentally friendly concrete uses less energy.
The environmentally friendly concrete produces very less carbon dioxide compared to the other concrete. Green concrete is one of the most important parts of environmentally friendly concrete.
What Is a Green Concrete?
The eco-friendly concrete which is made of waste of concrete is called green concrete. The green concrete provides an extra step in the mix design with a long life cycle in very low maintenance cost.
The green concrete is very good for CO2 emission energy saving and also as a wastewater resistor. Nowadays the word green not only represents the color, it also represents the environment that is also covering us.
In the history of the concrete world, green concrete is a revolution topic in Denmark; it was first invented in 1998. With the color green concrete has nothing to do.
To form green concrete many materials can be used that are, waste glass, recycled concrete, power plant wastes, slag mining and quarrying, red med, incinerator residue, sawdust, and foundry sand.
Green concrete has come into the market for reducing the impact of concrete on the environment.

There are have many reasons for using of green concrete in the construction world, that are described below – The first reason for use of green concrete is, in the production time of green concrete, compared to other concrete, it takes very less energy.
Another reason for use of green concrete is, it produces very less carbon dioxide when it is manufactured compared to other concrete.
The next reason for the use of green concrete is, it is a resource-saving concrete, by CO2 emissions, energy saving it reduces the impact of structure on the environment.
Another reason for use of green concrete in construction is, the uses of green concrete make the structure economic.
The common reason for use of green concrete in construction is, the homeowner wants to make a modern and beautiful building. By the use of green concrete, we can reduce sustainable development and also reduce environmental pollution.
Compared to conventional concrete, green concrete has far better workability. That’s why green concrete is used in construction. Compared to the other concrete, the green concrete is more fire-resistant and also thermal resistant, for this reason, the use of green concrete in construction is increasing day by day.
Green Concrete Materials
There are different types of materials are used for preparing green concrete, those are-
- Green concrete materials are generally waste materials like fly ash, furnace stag, recycled glass, silica fume, wood ash, etc are generally used as a substitute material of cement.
- In case of using aggregates, here we use broken glass, waste plastic, rubbish, stone crusher waste material, foundry sand, etc. So, these are basically the materials of green concrete.
Application of Green Concrete
There are many applications of green concrete are there, those are in the following-
- The main application of green concrete is it is used in huge projects like dams, bridges, retaining wall, etc.
- The another application of green concrete is it is also used in building projects.
- In the recent times, green concrete is also used in road constructions.
- One of the milestone projects of green concrete are Horse Dam and Rihand Dam which is located in Hungary.

Environmental Benefits of Green Concrete
There are generally four types of environmental benefits are available, those are in the following.
1. Higher Longevity
Green concrete easily and quickly gains strength and the shrinkage cracks also less observed in this concrete. Green concrete structure can withstand 2400 degree Fahrenheit heat, so it is a better fire-resisting material than normal concrete.
Green concrete is a good corrosion resisting material where it indirectly reduces environmental pollution. This similar types of materials are found in Roman empire and Ukrainian buildings; those buildings have a high long-lasting property without applying any types of repairing works.
2. Uses of Industrial Waste
Fly ash is a industrial waste material which releases from any type of factory. Actually in Portland cement, the whole concrete is made from 100% cement material but in green concrete, we use atleast 25 to 90% of fly ash.
Huge areas are used to dispose the fly ash; so lands are also used for preparing or converting the fly ash a usable material and then those will transport to green concrete plant.
3. Lesser Energy Consumption
In the time of preparing green concrete if you less amount of Portland cement and more amount of fly ash then less amount of energy is required.
Preparing of Portland cement, you are using high amount of heat is required, so you are using higher energy but in case of green concrete it does not require more amount of energy because the main material is fly ash which is itself a byproduct, so it consumes less energy.
Those buildings, which are constructed by green concrete, are very much energy efficient because there is a very less amount of energy changes.
4. Reduces CO2 Emissions
In Portland cement, the main ingredients are pulverized limestone, sand, clay, etc which are heated at the temperature of 1450 degree centigrade by fuel or natural gas and emits carbon dioxide at a rate of 5 to 8 percent.
In case of green concrete production, the carbon dioxide emission is lesser than 8 percent, which is environmental friendly nature.
